Where do you work? What is your role, including responsibilities and projects?

I recently joined the Faculty of Engineering at Western University as a Communications Specialist. I am responsible for carrying out a variety of communications related activities with a specific focus on research, graduate, alumni, and internal communication initiatives. I work with a small but amazing team to support the development of marketing materials and the implementation of strategies for student, community, alumni, and donor engagement to enhance the reputation of the Faculty. 

How long have you been an IABC member?

I have been an IABC member for a year.

In your opinion, what are the benefits of being an IABC member? What resources or programs offered by IABC have you engaged in?

As an IABC member, I get opportunities to connect with other professionals in the field for advice and engage in discussions on trending topics or issues in the profession. I also read articles, newsletters, and listen to PodCatalyst: The Official Podcast of the IABC on Spotify.  

What area(s) of communications are you passionate about?

I am passionate about internal communications because it builds trust and positively contributes to many facets of the organization. 

Tell us about an important project or achievement from your career.

I had the pleasure of developing a campaign for Immploy, a non-profit organization that connects employers to immigrant talent for job and mentorship opportunities. The campaign boosted the awareness of the organization’s services and doubled the number of employers who shared job opportunities, volunteers who mentored newcomers, and immigrant job-seekers who gained employment.   

Are you involved in volunteer work or other roles in the community?

Until recently, I volunteered with the City of London’s Community Diversity & Inclusion Strategy (CDIS) and as a member of the marketing and communications committee for the London Chamber of Commerce for three years. 

Do you have any advice for those starting out in this field?

It is a wonderful feeling to hammer out a communications plan filled with great key messages and tactics but ensure these are strongly linked to the organization’s strategic goals and business objectives. Keep that in mind as well when communicating with top management inside your organization. You really do have to know your audience and this includes internal stakeholders who have high power and influence within your organization.
