Reporting to the Associate Vice President, Marketing and Communications, the Manager of Communications is responsible for finding, tracking, and telling stories that best support Huron’s mission. The Manager, Communications will be responsible for find and interviewing students, faculty, and alumni throughout the year about events, awards, university initiatives, and research. The Manager, Communications will then determine how best to disseminate these stories (media, website, publications, social networks, etc.),

The Manager, Communications will also be responsible for coordinating the development of various University publications, administrative duties, as well as providing support for events both on and off campus.


  • Uncover and build impactful messaging by cultivating productive relationships with faculty, staff, students, and alumni to generate stories that connect deeply with audiences, encouraging their endorsement and financial support;
  • Maintain and curate an editorial calendar that supports university recruitment, advancement and student engagement Lead the development and end-to-end management of strategic communications projects;
  • Serve as a lead editor, and writer for Huron’s most widely read publications;
  • Provide event support, including pre and post event coverage of guest speakers to build brand awareness;
  • Develop a media relations strategy focused on earned media inclusive of trade publications, international media and community publications;
  • Carefully monitor news publications to identify trends, issues and stories that could impact Huron, and proactively develop strategies on how to address them;
  • Develop an internal communications strategy including the development of a staff newsletter that effectively engages staff, faculty and students and promotes a strong internal culture;
  • Mentor Marketing and Communications interns and junior staff;
  • Perform day-to-day functions of the communications office.

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a focus on Journalism, Marketing, Communications or a related discipline;
  • Two (2) years prior experience in a communications and/or marketing position with experience developing relationships with and pitching stories to media;
  • Proficiency in writing and editing articles for publication;
  • A strong understanding, and appreciation of the mission of a liberal arts university such as Huron;
  • Excellent time management skills and a demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks / deadlines and accurately complete work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Demonstrated judgement and problem-solving capabilities with a high degree of integrity, ethics, confidentiality and dedication to the mission and vision of Huron;
  • High-level of cultural competence, values, ethics, and principles that align with the Huron community and culture;
  • Well-honed and developed interpersonal skills to represent Huron professionally;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and ability to interact positively with internal and external stakeholders in a variety of settings;
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) and basic HTML knowledge would be considered an asset.
