Kadie Ward

Who says you won’t use your philosophy degree?

Kadie Ward uses the skills learned from her philosophy education in her role as marketing and communications director at the London Chamber of Commerce. She found that philosophy is a great degree because it helps acquire the skills communicators need: reading, writing, critical thinking, debating and oratory.

In addition to her degree in philosophy, Kadie has a master’s degree in communications – both from The University of Western Ontario.

As an undergraduate student, Kadie joined the London Chamber of Commerce’s Marketing and Communications Committee to get connected to the local business community. She ended up volunteering for the committee for five years.

And while taking media studies, she started a copywriting company, Pensells. For Kadie, owning her own company was a fantastic experience. It gave her the opportunity to collaborate with many types of people and businesses across Canada. When Kadie’s business partner decided to go to law school, she and Kadie disbanded the company. From Pensells, Kadie moved on to the Chamber.

Working with the Chamber is a totally different environment for Kadie. “Now I’m managing the marketing and communications for the entire organization. We have five annual events and at least two monthly events. I have to market all those, promote the Chamber itself and do media relations. So, working within a company, it’s always a challenge to coordinate the efforts, to make it look like one voice. The consistency of the branding will be always a challenge,” she explains.

A member of IABC since she was a student, Kadie values the professional development and networking the organization offers.

“I joined IABC to get connected - to network essentially, and market myself for jobs. When I’ve traveled I’ve contacted other IABC chapters and networked with their members. When I was in Vancouver, I met with the president of IABC International who happened to be traveling on business there. We had a great conversation. So, if people take advantage of the IABC membership, it can have huge value and offer the potential for growth.”

Kadie is a thriving communicator who’s not afraid to share the secrets of her success and, when asked, is willing to share some advice.

“Often we get into our own patterns, right? But you have to be creative and inspired when you’re doing communications. So challenge yourself personally - not just in your professional world. Do things that might cross your own boundaries, your own beliefs. Look at things from a different angle. That’s one thing philosophy taught me. You always have to argue something from both sides. Really engage in what you’re working on. And get involved. Join IABC. Join the Chamber. Or join another - because these people are your future colleagues.”
