Where do you work? What is your role, including responsibilities and projects?
I am the Manager of Communications at London Community Foundation. I am responsible for developing and executing the Foundation’s strategic communications plan. My responsibilities include overseeing the Foundation’s social media strategy, online and print communications, website management, media relations, and event management as well as special initiatives.
How long have you been an IABC member?
I have been an IABC member since 2011.
In your opinion, what are the benefits of being an IABC member? What resources offered by IABC have you taken advantage of?
The networking and professional development opportunities offered through IABC are invaluable. I believe it is important to connect with other communications professionals in the community and IABC offers excellent platforms for this. Additionally, the professional development events and award programs are an excellent way to ensure you are always gaining new knowledge and growing professionally.
What area(s) of communications are you passionate about?
I am passionate about non-profit communications and cause marketing. I love using my creativity to have a positive impact on the community. I believe I have one of the best jobs at the Foundation because I have the opportunity to meet the “unsung heroes” of our community – regular people who are giving back, doing work quietly to make an impact. It is such a privilege to share these stories.
Tell us about an important project or achievement from your career.
The Foundation team was recently awarded the Best of the Best Award for the communication skills division at the 2017 Virtuoso Awards for our Community Vitality Celebration event. This was a significant achievement for myself and my team as it was a confirmation of the success of the project based on the international standards set by IABC. To me, it means that our work has met a highly recognized standard of excellence.
As a small team at a non-profit organization, this award reinforced the importance of teamwork and collaboration. London Community Foundation is small, but mighty!
Are you involved in volunteer work or other roles in the community?
I have been involved with ReForest London for the past four years as a board member and chair of the marketing committee. I am also a member of the Museum London marketing committee. I am passionate about community building and believe strongly in giving back.
Do you have any advice for students, future communicators or those starting out in this field?
Be genuine. Be open to new ideas, feedback and opportunities. Pursue your passions and focus on forming strong relationships built on integrity.
What do you like the best about your profession?
I love how dynamic the communications profession is. It is always changing and the scope of work is so diverse. I am constantly learning new things. I also enjoy the ability to exercise my creativity. When it comes to ideas, the bolder, the better!
